From Moni Arkadi to Sfendoni Cave – €40

Moni Arcadi – Ancient Eleutherna – Margarites – Sfendoni Cave – €40 (plus entrance fee at Arkadi €3, cave – €5)

A day excursion to the East of Rethymno region, following the slopes of the highest mountain on Crete – the Mount Ida. We shall visit heroic Moni Arcadi, which became symbol of national resistance against the Turkish oppression.

We shall continue to remains of the ancient city-state Eleutherna, where active archeological excavations are taking place. We shall see necropolis, undercity and enjoy the rich historical heritage of this place.

Following the road, we shall get to Margarites pottery village. If you wish, you can take lessons of ancient pottery craft right there. We shall also dine here at the local tavern in the shade of the old mulberry tree.


We shall pass the Axos village with its rich historical past, there we’ll visit the wooden sculptures museum.

After Axios, we shall go up to the northern slope of the Mount Ida and will go deep down to Sfendoni Cave, a true natural wonder. This large and beautiful cave is richly illuminated and is very impressive.

On our way back we shall have a swim in the beautiful small cove.
